Building Momentum: 2 Years of the Missouri Department of Transportation, Smart Riders Initiative
Missouri Department of Transportation partnered with Campus Multimedia for a second year to expand the reach of the Smart Riders program to elementary schools throughout the state.
The Missouri Department of Transportation created a road safety program for schools—a “Smart Riders” curriculum built to keep kids safe in and around cars, buses, and sidewalks. What they needed was a way to get it where it mattered most. Using geo-targeting, we pinpointed the specific DMAs across Missouri with the greatest need, then packaged MoDOT’s program into ready-to-teach classroom kits and shipped them straight to those schools. They created the message; we made sure it was communicated, packaged, and delivered to the students who needed it.
This year, participating schools received:
Age-appropriate books on road safety
Smart Riders stickers
“Rider’s License” photo op
Smart Riders memory match card game
Classroom prizes.
Program Wins
Increased engagement and knowledge level of the Smart Riders curriculum
Provided resources to parents, teachers, and caregivers to help their child/student learn more about staying safe while in or around cars.
IMPACT by the Numbers
At the close of the second school year, we surveyed educators at participating schools across Missouri to learn how the Smart Riders program had been implemented in their classrooms. Their responses, covering everything from student knowledge and engagement to whether they'd run it again, tell a clear story.
“My teachers are very excited about implementing this into their programs. I appreciate all of your help and think this is a great program, especially for our community where we have a lot of students that walk/ride bikes to and from school.”
