Reaching Schools at Scale: Georgia Bike Safety Program Delivers Statewide Impact
Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety x Campus Multimedia: Bike Safety School Program
The Challenge
The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) needed to get bike safety education in front of the students who need it most, upper elementary and middle schoolers gearing up for summer riding, in the communities where accidents and fatalities are most concentrated. Reaching that audience at scale, across major metro markets and rural districts alike, required a distribution and engagement system built for schools.
The Solution
Campus Multimedia partnered with GOHS to create and deploy a comprehensive bike safety education kit to 200 elementary and middle schools across Georgia, spanning major metro markets including Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, and Savannah. Ten districts anchored the rollout, led by Cobb County (28 schools), Richmond County (24), and Fulton County (19).
Each kit combined physical and digital resources designed to be impactful in the classroom and at home:
Teacher lesson guides built around the ABC Bike Check (Air, Brakes, Chains)
Hallway posters for high-traffic areas
Student worksheets and a Bike Safety Pledge activity
Helmet stickers and reflective materials
Family engagement tools and take-home fact cards
Ready-to-post social media templates
The program was built around three core messages: Gear Up, Be Seen, and Ride Smart, giving teachers a simple framework to reinforce with students before summer break.
The Results
The program reached 146,000 students across 200 schools, with 57% at the elementary level and 43% at the middle school level. Pre- and post-program surveys showed bike safety awareness climbing from an average of 2.44 out of 5 to 4 out of 5, a 64% increase.
Educators reported the kits opened conversations that hadn't been happening at home:
"Many times, parents and schools provide students with bikes for recreation and transportation without fully discussing important bike safety rules and expectations. The Bike Safety Kits helped begin that important conversation with students at our school."
— Myeshia Yarber, Burdell-Hunt Magnet School
"The info presented helped them understand the importance of the A-B-C bike check for safety!"
— Sean Myers, Pine Ridge Elementary
The program met each of its core goals: extending existing driver and passenger safety campaigns into late elementary and middle school classrooms, prioritizing districts that over-index on accident and fatality data, and giving students a foundation they carry home to influence family riding habits.
